In 1991 the Ikon Gallery Birmingham commissioned a solo exhibition by Keith Piper entitled ‘A Ship Called Jesus’ for their old site in John Bright Street, Birmingham.

Thirty years later, In July 2021, to coincide with the exhibition ‘A Very Special Place: Ikon in the 1990s’ the gallery commissioned a single screen video work revisiting some of the themes of the original exhibition entitled ‘A Ship Called Jesus (Redux) 2021’.
