a short history (iv)

In 2016, Piper was commissioned by the Arts Council Collection to create a new work as part of their 70th Anniversary, alongside artists John Akomfrah, Hurvin Anderson, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Ryan Gander, Mark Leckey, Katie Paterson and Heather Phillipson. The resultant body of work, entitled ‘UnEarthing the Bankers Bones’ was produced in association with InIVA and the Bluecoat Liverpool, where it was initially exhibited in from October 2016 to January 2017.

In 2017, Piper was commissioned by Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall to produce a new video work called ‘Mic Drop’.

Between October and December 2019, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, site of the Piper’s first public exhibition in 1981 group show ‘Black Art an’ Done’, hosted a solo retrospective exhibition of the first two decades of his practice. ‘Body Politics’: Work from 1982 – 2007, revisited a number of key works from the 1980s and the 1990s, finishing with a single video work from 2007.

This project was the first stage in a larger collaboration with the New Art Gallery Walsall, another venue located in the ‘Black Country’ region of the UK where Piper grew up. The proposed umbrella title of this project, as well as the title for the planned exhibition at the New Art Gallery Walsall is ‘Jet Black Futures’.

This exhibition was scheduled to take place in September 2020 but has been postponed due to the impact of the pandemic Coronavirus, Covid-19. A blog tracking the research and development of various aspects of this project can be found at http://www.keithpiper.info/jbfronttexts1.html
